How to Use a Baby Wrap: A Step-by-Step Guide for New Parents
Using a baby wrap for the first time can feel a little intimidating — but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. Whether you’re trying to settle a newborn, go hands-free at home, or head out for a walk, a soft, stretchy baby wrap like the one from Ohbubs can be an absolute game-changer.
In this guide, we'll walk you through exactly how to use your baby wrap, with simple step-by-step instructions and safety tips for new parents. Scroll to the bottom to watch our full video tutorial!
Why Choose a Baby Wrap?
Baby wraps are one of the most comfortable and supportive ways to carry your baby — especially in those early newborn months. The fabric distributes your baby's weight evenly across your shoulders and hips, and it encourages closeness and bonding. The fabric is soft and comfortable for you, and for baby. Our Ohbubs baby wraps pack up small and come with a handy little bag, perfect for in your nappy bag, or the bottom of the pram. Baby wraps are also much, much cheaper than structured baby carriers, they're an ideal introduction to baby wearing.

Make sure:

Your baby is calm and fed

How to Tie Your Baby Wrap (Front Carry – Newborn Hold)
1. Find the Centre
Look for the Ohbubs tag — this marks the centre of the wrap.
2. Wrap Around Your Waist
Place the centre tag across your belly, we call this part the 'Belt'. Bring each side of the wrap behind your back and cross them over your shoulders, creating an X on your back.
3. Create an X on Your Front
Bring both ends down over your shoulders and pull them tight. Cross them again in front of your chest. Tuck each side under the fabric panel at your waist.
4. Secure and Tie
Pull snug and tie a double knot at your back, side, or front — wherever feels most comfortable.
5. Position Your Baby
Slide your baby into the X-shape on your chest, using the side of the X that is closet to your body first. Make sure to keep one hand on baby at all times. Their bottom should sit in the fabric seat with knees higher than their hips, forming the “M” shape.
6. Cover with the Belt (waist panel)
Pull the centre waist panel (with the tag) up and over your baby for extra support.
Final Checks
Baby’s face is visible and kissable
Chin is off their chest, with plenty of space around their mouth and nose for breathing
Fabric is snug, but not too tight
Baby’s legs form the “M” shape, knees higher than bum
Baby's spine is straight and lined up with your spine
Baby Wrap Safety Tips (T.I.C.K.S. Rule)
✔️ Tight – The wrap should be snug, holding baby close to your body
✔️ In View at All Times – Baby’s face should always be visible
✔️ Close Enough to Kiss – You should be able to kiss the top of their head
✔️ Keep Chin Off Chest – Baby’s head should not be slumped forward
✔️ Supported Back – Baby’s back should be well supported and not slouching
