The Fourth Trimester Essentials
What is the fourth trimester?
The first three months after baby is born are sometimes referred to as the fourth trimester. Baby is still rapidly developing outside of the womb, and new parents are going through huge changes too!
During the fourth trimester babies benefit from an environment that mimics the womb:
- Warmth and closeness
- Gentle motion and familiar sounds
- Frequent feeding and contact
Warmth & Closeness
Think baby wearing, swaddling, and keeping baby close. New babies love that snuggly, enclosed feeling.

Gentle motion and familiar sounds
Baby wearing is also helpful for providing motion just like in the womb! Honestly, baby wearing is the absolute best! Babies also love the familiar sound of their parents and loved-ones voices. Some babies may benefit from a white noise machine like the Baby Shusher.
Frequent feeding and contact
Tiny tummies mean regular feeds and cuddles. With so much closeness you might find that you and baby benefit from wearing natural fabrics, like cotton and merino wool.
The goal is to recreate that safe, womb-like feeling while helping your baby gradually adjust to the world.
